Lao Cai has a tropical monsoon climate. However, because the deep continental is controlled by the complex topography, Lao Cai weather changes over time and space. The average rainfall fluctuates from 1800mm to 2000mm. The average temperature in lower lands varies from 23 – 29 degrees Celsius. The average rainfall ranges from 1400mm - 1700mm. Fog often happens in this province. During the freezing period, in the high mountains and valleys, hoarfrost also appears, lasting 2-3 days in each phase. Lao Cai is located in the Northwest Vietnam. This province is portrayed by weather in Northwest Vietnam with two seasons: rainy season, and dry season. In rainy season (from April to October), weather in Lao Cai is characterized with high temperature and precipitation. From April to May, the average temperature is about 25 degrees Celsius. The difference between temperatures of these month is 8 degrees. The precipitation varies from 114.7mm (in April) to 181mm (in May). From June to August, even in September, the average temperature remains unchanged at about 32 degrees Celsius. And, the gap between the average high temperature and low temperature is 8 degrees. The rainfall level ranges from 232mm (in June) to 326mm (August). The highest rainfall is seen in August which is also the rainiest month in a year. From September to October, the average temperature is about 30 degrees Celsius. The temperature tends to decrease at the end of a year. The gap between average high and low temperatures remains at 8 degrees. The average precipitation falls from 160mm in September to 91.1mm in October. During the rainy season, the total hours of sunshine is about 5.5 hours, highest in April and May (6 hours), while other months sees 5 hours of sunshine.

In dry season (from November to March), the average temperature is always under 20 degrees Celsius. The rainfall level never exceeds 100mm. From November to December, the average temperature in a month falls from 26 to 23 degrees Celsius. The rainfall is low with 59mm in November and 24mm in December. During these months, the northeast monsoon is influencing all Northern part of Vietnam, thus, Lao Cai is affected, too. The lowest levels of temperature and rainfall are seen in January (21 degrees Celsius, 18mm). From February to March, the average rainfall and the average temperature are on the rise with the former from 40mm to 51mm, while the latter is from 22 to 25 degrees Celsius. The gap between the average high and low temperature during dry season is about 1 degree lower than that in rainy season. Also, in this season, the total hours of sunshine are about 3-4 hours. In the late months of a year, snow sometimes appears in Lao Cai, especially in mountainous areas (Sapa). In addition, hoarfrost often occurs in highlands and valleys.
