Da Nang currently owns 3 pagodas named Linh Ung. There is a coincidence that all three temples are located in the prime position of Da Nang City, forming a holy triangle in Da Nang travel. They are Linh Ung Non Nuoc Pagoda - located in Mount Thuy Son or Water Mountain, one of 5 mounts in Marble Mountains; Linh Ung Ba Na - located in the towering mountain of the tourist site dubbing "Dalat of the Central"; and Linh Ung Son Tra - located halfway up the mountain of Son Tra Peninsula. Among them, Linh Ung Son Tra Pagoda is the newest, largest and most beautiful pagoda. Located in the mountaintop in Buddha Beach (Bai But), Son Tra Peninsula (also known as Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda or Linh Ung Son Tra Pagoda), Linh Ung Pagoda overlooks the South China Sea, of which one side is immense Cu Lao Cham island, another side is spectacular Hai Van Pass, and the rest is peaceful Han River.
Linh Ung Son Tra Pagoda is the largest pagoda in Da Nang City in both term of scale (about 20ha) and artistic architecture. The pagoda is situated in the Son Tra Peninsula tourist complex. It is built with the harmonious combination of the modernity and the tradition of Vietnamese pagoda's architecture. Linh Ung Pagoda now is one of appealing tourist attractions of the beautiful coastal city. This is also the harmony between the sea and the mountain in a quiet space, along with the murmur of the sea; simultaneously, the pagoda is also the special place linking Heaven and Earth.
The pagoda brings a contemporary style combined with the tradition of Buddhist temples in Vietnam with a curved roof with a dragon, its sturdy pillar surrounded by sophisticated winding dragons. Along the two sides of the path leading to the main chamber are statues of 18 Arhats, each describing different human beings’ emotions – joyous, angry, happy and sad, and each being sculptured so skillfully. Inside the pagoda’s main chamber, statues of Buddha Shakyamuri, Guanyin and Tripitaka are displayed. All make the scene extremely attractive and lively. In addition, other categories, including the main chamber, the ancestors’ house, and the statue garden of Arhats, all were built and arranged magnificently. Tourists once arriving Linh Ung Pagoda actually admire Arhat statues which are sculpted subtly, but no less softly.
The most prominent feature in the architectural ensemble of Linh Ung Pagoda is Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara statue overlooking the sea. The statue is 67 meter high and 35 meters in diameter of the lotus, which is a high as a 30-storey building. This is the magnificent works of two sculptors: Thuy Lam and Chau Viet Thanh. Inside this statue, there are 17 floors, each housing 21 tiny Buddha statues with different shapes and facial expressions. At night, the statues are prominently illuminated in skylines, and virtually seen from any location in Da Nang. Local people believe that the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara statue would take care of local fishermen and gives them the strength to deal with storms and high waves.
From the pagoda's courtyard, tourists will comfortably contemplate the panoramic view of whole Da Nang City, forests, islands and waters of Son Tra Peninsula. Far away to to the south is majestic Marble Mountains, Non Nuoc Beach with fine white sand. Visiting Linh Ung Pagoda, tourists also have the opportunity to admire the panorama of a metropolis which is on track to strongly grow. Seen from the pagoda, the city seems to be surrounded by immense blue sky, white sand beaches winding paths in foothills and sparkling under the soft sunlight of the peninsula.
Linh Ung Pagoda was built in a tourist complex which has been newly formed of city - Son Tra Peninsula tourist area in one of the most prime locations in the city. It is not only a religious site, but also a spiritual tourist attraction to those who would like to take part in traveling in Da Nang. Tourists also do not have to be a Buddhist or religious to be interested. They can just simply come to the pagoda to find some spiritual therapy for himself or herself and some strength to deal with burdens of the soul.
