Long Bien Bridge

 

As one of the famous bridges in Hanoi, Long Bien Bridge officially started its construction in September 1898 and finished after 3 years and 7 months. The bridge was initially named "Doumer Bridge", the name of Governor-General of French Indochina at that time. Currently, it still remains the metal plaque engraved "1899 -1902 - Dayde & Pille - Paris" on the bridgehead. Long Bien Bridge consists of 20 piers and bridge abutments with the depth of 30m and 13,5m high. The most prominent of the bridge is 2 roads on the both sides and a railway in the middle. Instead of Chinese workers employed previously, with the ingenuity, subtleness, Vietnam workers directly assembled metal components, riveted handles, operated cranes... under the instruction of French engineers.

With a length of 1,682 m and 896 m long of approaching bridge, Long Bien Bridge is divided into 9 frames with the length of 61 m each. The bridge was constructed with more than 5,300 tonnes of steel from France, cement produced in Hai Phong province, wood from Thanh Hoa province and over 30,000 m3 stone from many parts throughout Vietnam. It is the first bridge of the railway route running through Indochina and Hanoi - Hai Phong route as well. In particular, steels used on Long Bien Bridge is also the kinds of steel creating famous Effel Tower in Paris - the French capital.
