A Vietnamese tour guide brought me into the post office and told a staff to help me sending a parcel overseas. Looking around me, so many tourists were busy running around to complete procedures sending postcards or souvenirs from Ho Chi Minh City to their families. Although the staff was friendly and affable with a beautiful smile on her face, Vietnam postal law could not be changed. Using a knife to open the parcel carefully, checking in a while, she calmly explained to me that DVD could not be sent abroad. Feeling sad a little bit because of being not able to send some videos of my tour in Vietnam to my family, I sat on a chair to looking for another way to send those DVD. And that was the time I recognized the beauty of this post office.
Located on a bustling street at the center of Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon Central Post Office carries a unique ancient beauty totally different from a huge number of modern buildings here. The post’s office architecture is the combination of European style and Asian décor. Saigon Post Office features a balanced composition of an aesthetic structure. The building is constructed in cubic structure with a arch-shaped dome above doors.
As a French tourist, I recognized that this Post Office and Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral were two most outstanding French-style works in Ho Chi Minh City. I was sure that the architect responsible for constructing the post office is French. On the walls of Saigon Post Office were rectangles which were carved with pictures of some French celebrities such as Voltaire, Laplace, Arago, and scientists having invented telegraph and telephone that I did not know their name. In my opinion, the Central Post Office was truly a masterpiece in modern Ho Chi Minh City. Its beauty is as stunning and dreamy as other famous attractions in Ho Chi Minh City.
Spending a couple of hours here, I was amazed at the number of people coming here. Many of them came here to send postcards and souvenirs to their families and friends. Others visited here to contemplate the architectural beauty like me. Although serving a large number of customers, staffs here were always smiling friendly. I came across with a group of students sitting on the floor immersed in drawing patterns on floor tiles. Their pictures were so amazing that I thought they were taking photographs but not drawing for some minutes. I thought about one of my friends who specialized in art. I definitely brought him here in the next visit. He would love it for sure.
