Ho Chi Minh City that is well known for Saigon River has over 1000 kilometers in waterways functioning inland and tourism transport. Therefore, the city wants to take this advantage to develop waterway tourism. Boat Festival, held on the occasion of 10th anniversary of International Travel Expo Ho Chi Minh City, was an opportunity to introduce to the public, tourists and enterprises in tourism transport outstanding advantages of products of waterway tourism in Ho Chi Minh City.
The content of the festival was composed of 2 main parts: a party welcoming international tourism partners and the parade of Boat Festival in Ho Chi Minh City. The party welcomed and gave reception to international travel companies participating in the International Travel Expo Ho Chi Minh City 2014 (ITE HCMC). They were 200 buyers and 100 invited leaders in tourism industry, Mayors of cities in Asia and leaders of provinces and localities in Vietnam. The parade of Boat Festival aimed to introduce products of waterway tourism. The parade, an idea of tourism companies in Ho Chi Minh City, was held in accordance with forms of cruises on Bach Dang Wharf. Cruises were decorated with light according to different themes bringing typical characteristics of attractions in the city. The program was designed to create a sparkling light space. A glowing night sky was made from LEDs and lasers. The parade highlighted the theme of Ho Chi Minh City tourism as “Vibrant Ho Chi Minh City”.
Years ago, Ho Chi Minh City did not focus on developing waterway tourism. However, it participated in ITE HCMC with 2 booths, one for introducing Ho Chi Minh City and the other for promoting waterway tourism. With the careful preparation, this formal and scaled introduction attracted attention from a large number of visitors. By now, the city is eager to develop this kind of tourism, considering it as a potential new market. Recently, the city has elaborate and thorough preparation. Up to this point, there are over 100 vehicles, 15 other vehicles being exploited, and 60 cruises of all classes. In term of berth, there are 6 invested by Vietnamese government and other 8 socialized. However, for further development, it requires to build more 42 berths. Expectedly, in late third quarter and early fourth quarter this year, Ho Chi Minh City will officially put river routes into exploitation. It is expected that in the near future waterway tourism will become a unique type of tourism truly attractive to tourists visiting Ho Chi Minh City.
