National Ca Tru Festival will be held in Hanoi in late August with the participation of troupes from 15 cities in Vietnam. The festival is celebrated by the Institute of Music and Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Ca Tru is a traditional genre of chamber music featuring female vocalists accompanied by band of traditional musical instruments in Northern Vietnam. In ancient times, it flourished as a form of entertainment dedicated to Vietnamese wealthy people and even performed in royal court. Ca Tru Art made its appearance in the North of Vietnam around 15th century and thrived until the early 20th century. Despite having passed its peak, Ca Tru is still considered as an important part in Vietnamese culture. Ca Tru is listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2009.

This year festival marks the collaboration of the Institute of Music of Vietnam and 15 Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism of provinces and cities which are the only 15 places across the country possessing Ca Tru, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong City, Northern Provinces of Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, Phu Tho, Thanh Ha, Thai Binh and Vinh Phuc, and the Central Provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Binh. National Ca Tru Festival 2014 is assessed as one of the most outstanding cultural events and festivals in Vietnam.

The festival is an artistic event aiming to promulgate and promote the achievements of conservation project protecting Ca Tru Art during 5 years from 2010 to 2014. National Ca Tru Festival is an opportunity to encourage young artists of Ca Tru to study and stick with this traditional ethnic art. The festival is also to assist cultural conservationists in evaluating achievements in the project of protecting Ca Tru Art, confirming that this Intangible Cultural Heritage has overcome the situation of “urgent safeguarding in need”. Therefore, it is a basic step of proposing to UNESCO to move Ca Tru from the list of “urgent safeguarding in need” to the Representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”.

Besides, the Organizing Committee also encourages clubs, troupes and individuals to perform other genres which have been restored and explored recently. The judge committee will award on the basis of 5 criteria: Ca Tru space, best vocalist, best band, potential vocalist and potential band.
