The Airbus A319 is a narrow-body, short-to-medium range jet aircraft manufactured by Airbus. The aircraft has a capacity of 124 to 125 passengers with a maximum range of 6,900km. Airbus A319 is a shortened-fuselage variant of the Airbus A320 and was first used in April 1996 with Swissair.

Development

According to The New York Times. Airbus 319 was a commercial aircraft developed at the request of Steven Udvar-Hazy, former president and CEO of ILFC.

The Airbus A319’s fuselage was shortened and changed according to the design of Airbus A320 aircraft.

The Airbus A319 consumes nearly the same energy as the A320-200 and can carry fewer passengers.

Airbus began offering new models and the first Airbus A319’s customer was ILFC with a contract for six aircraft on May 22, 1992.

The first Airbus A319 went through final assembly in Germany at the Hamburg plant, where A321 was also assembled on March 23.

Operational history

On April 25, 1996, the first Airbus A319 was delivered to Swissair and was put into operation by month’s end.

An A319 broke a record with a range of 6,645km on the great circle route from Hamburg to Manitoba in 9 hours and 5 minutes in January 1997.

Airbus A319 has become very popular with low-cost airlines such as EasyJet with 172 aircraft.

As of January 31, 2018, a total of 1,476 A319 models were delivered. The direct opponent of Airbus A319 is Boeing 737-700.
