Development

On September 11, 2001, the global aviation market was disrupted by attacks that increased petroleum prices. It made airlines more concerned with efficiency than speed.

On January 29, 2003, Boeing announced an alternative product - the 7E7 (later Boeing 787).

On July 8, 2007, Boeing launched the first 787 at the roll-out ceremony and planned its first flight in late August 2007.

On August 7, 2007, the Boeing 787 was certified on time for the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines from European and US regulators.

On December 15, 2009, Boeing made its first flight from Paine Field in Everett, Washington to Boeing Field in Seattle.

On August 13, 2011, a Boeing 787 - 8 aircraft was certified by Rolls-Royce. Thirteen days later, on August 26, 2011, the Boeing 787 gained the certification of FAA and the European Aviation Safety Agency.

In 2011, after receiving certification, Boeing increased the production rate of Boeing 787 to 12 aircraft per month at assembly lines in Everett and Charleston for two years.

From the end of 2020, production speed will be reduced from 14 to 12 aircraft per month due to the China-United State trade war.

Operational history

On September 25, 2011, the first Boeing 787 aircraft was officially delivered to All Nippon Airways (ANA). Less than a month later, the airline received the second Boeing 787. All Nippon Airways put Boeing 787 into operation on the flight from Tokyo Narita Airport to Hong Kong International Airport on October 26, 2011.

By the end of 2017, there were 39 airlines operating Boeing 787 on 983 routes with an average length of 5,282 km.

As of August 2019, there are 808 Boeing aircraft in service including Boeing 787-8 (328 aircraft), Boeing 787-9 (451 aircraft), Boeing 787 -10 (29 aircraft) and 483 orders.

All Nippon Airways is the largest operator with 61 aircraft, followed by Japan Airlines (42), American Airlines (42) and United Airlines (34).

In March 2020, Air Tahiti Nui Airlines made a record commercial flight of 9,765 miles from Papeete, Tahiti to Paris.

On April 3, 2020, the 1000th Boeing 787 Dreamliner was delivered to Singapore Airlines. The airline made its first flight on April 3, 2020.

As of April 2020, 972 Boeing 787 aircraft have been produced.
