Vietnam National Museum of Nature will be constructed with the purpose of scientific research, supporting museum members in collecting, manipulating, displaying and preserving natural artifacts. The museum is a non-profit cultural - scientific organization with functions in collection, storage, preservation, exhibition and study collections of specimens and materials of nature and Vietnam natural resources, disseminating knowledge, education, scientific research, sightseeing, and tourism. The project for investing in Vietnam National Museum of Nature has been approved by the Prime Minister according to the proposal of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. The location for the construction of the museum may be in Quoc Oai Ecological Urban, belonging to three communes of Liep Tuyet, Ngoc Liep and Ngoc My in Quoc Oai District or in Vietnam ethnic cultural - tourism village in Dong Mo, Son Tay in Hanoi.
According to the plan, it will be a first national museum of nature with the function of studying scientific researches on nature, supporting museum members in the system of Vietnam nature museums on scientific research, collecting, manipulating, displaying and protecting natural artifacts. The total investment of the project is determined on the basis of the evaluation of specific projects, consistent with the ability to allocate resources for investment, and secured from the State budget, supported by local and international organizations and individuals and other legal sources. For State budget, the preparation of the annual budget shall comply with the provisions, consistent with the ability to balance the state budget in each period and arrange in the draft budget of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
The project of developing Vietnam Museum of Nature is divided into two phases. The first phase is from 2015 to 2020, including site preparation, construction of infrastructure, procurement of equipment, organizing to seek, receive, and collect samples, building scripts and displaying galleries, exhibitions, planning and training of human resources. The second phase is from 2021 to 2025. And, the next phase will complete construction items of infrastructure, procurement of equipment, seek, receive, collect specimens, finish script display and exhibition, training of human resources. The project will build on an area of 32 ha, including: indoor exhibition, national samples galleries, closed evergreen forest, caves, mountains, stone park, geological garden, exhibition in combination with studying, researching center and offices, service area, lakes, islands, and aquarium, engineering area and fabrication of specimens.
The general plan of system of Vietnam museums of nature by 2020 approved by the Prime Minister will be the national museum, leading in the system of museums of Vietnam nature. In Vietnam, there are some museums of nature existing since the French period, but there has not been a system of nature museums so the popularity of science, education, and communication is limited. The Prime Minister has approved the master plan of the Vietnam museum of natural system with the validity to 2020. Thereby, Vietnam Museum of Nature is a national-level museum, the first one in museums of Vietnam nature. It has a role to guide and support the network of museums in Vietnam.
