On April 30th, in the framework of Halong Carnival, nearly 150 ancient photographs of Halong Bay were displayed in an exhibition to honor the beauty of one of seven wonders in the world.

The exhibition features typical antique photographs of Halong taken from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. Those images, which were mainly shot by French photographers, were collected by Mr. Doan Thinh, a teacher and Mr. Doan Bac, a hobbyist and an architect. They had gathered such old photos from various regions for the past 10 years. The collection includes about 150 photos of Halong Bay taken from different angles such as from airplanes, mountain peaks and boats, as well as images of people living in the bay. Mr. Duong Trung Quoc, a leading historian in Vietnam appreciated that early photos taken by the French in Vietnam were important historical materials. He also added that the collection was among the most valuable records of French people’s lives in Vietnam.

Impressed by this unique collection, Lam Dong Food Joint Stock Company has decided to bring those photographs from Dalat to Halong Bay, the homeland of photos, on the occasion of Halong Carnival. Tourists and local people taking part in the exhibition will have the opportunity to make a journey through times to explore the history of Halong Bay hundred years ago.

Participants expressed their surprise at the against-time beauty of Halong Bay.  Mr. Ha Quang Long, Director of Quang Ninh provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that he appreciated greatly this collection. Quang Ninh tourism had many photo galleries of Halong before but this exhibition has left a really deep impression on him. Through antique photographs, the sustainable value of Halong landscapes was expressed clearly. Those photos had to be well preserved handing down to future generations as a precious treasure. He also shared that he privately preferred the images of Hon Dua because it gave him a feeling of peace.
