Khmer Festival of Culture, Sports and Tourism 2014 opens

Khmer Festival of Culture, Sports and Tourism is opened today with the attendance of 12 southern provinces. It will take place from November 27th to 29th with a subject "The Southern Khmer ethnic people – solidarity towards the country's islands".

Khmer Festival of Culture, Sports and Tourism is one of important festivals of Khmer people. This is also one among annual festivals in Vietnam. The 6th Khmer Festival of Culture, Sports and Tourism in this year will be held in order to honor unique cultural identity of Khmer ethnic groups thereby contributing to preserve and promote Khmer cultural values in the diversity and unity of Vietnam culture. The 6th Khmer Festival of Culture, Sports and Tourism welcomes the participation of 12 southern provinces including Hau Giang, An Giang, Bac Lieu, Binh Phuoc, Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Soc Trang, Tay Ninh, Tra Vinh, Vinh Long, Can Tho, and Ho Chi Minh City.

On a theme of "The Southern Khmer ethnic people – solidarity towards the country's islands", the festival is considered as a forum to strengthen the solidarity of the whole nation in protecting the country's islands. This is also an occasion to introduce and promote traditionally cultural values of Khmer community in Vietnam to other citizens of the country and international friends as well. The Khmer Festival of Culture, Sports and Tourism creates a favorable condition for 54 ethnic groups to meet, exchange, and strengthen the solidarity among different regions in the country.

The opening ceremony of the festival will be held in Hoa Binh Square, Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang Province from 8.00 pm to 9.30 pm tonight and lively televised on Vietnam Television (VTV) and some other channels. The closing ceremony also takes place in Hoa Binh Square and televised lively from 8.00 pm to 9.30 pm on November 29th. Within the framework of the festival, there are many exciting activities will be organized. Specifically, art festivals, fashion shows, and folk festivals will be held in Hau Giang Cultural Center. In the exhibition area, there are many art performances such as traditional music and dance and traditional costumes will take place.

Attending in the festival, visitors also have a great chance to watch and join sports competitions and traditional games including Dua Ghe Ngo (a kind of traditional boat racing of Khmer people), tug of war, mini soccer, volleyball, etc. In addition, food culture festival will be held in Xa No Park with Khmer culinary contest and the introduction of gastronomic culture of Vietnamese ethnic groups such as Viet, China, Cham, S'tieng, and so on. Also happening in Xa No Park, an exhibition of culture, sports and tourism will introduce Hau Giang achievements, cultural characteristics of Vietnam ethnic minority groups, and the introduction and the promotion of culture and tourism product.

The activities in the festival will be performed by Khmer artisans, artists, actors, and musicians. The 6th Khmer Festival of Culture, Sports and Tourism aims to honor special culture of Khmer community in the southern region and reflect the harmony combination between the typical cultural values of the country.
