Vietnam Institute of Archaeology has recently conducted a survey in Dong Van Plateau and discovered many archeological artifacts here. Almost all artifacts are evaluated to exist in prehistoric era.

During over a week, from July 26th to August 6th 2014, the delegation under Vietnam Institute of Archaeology in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ha Giang Province has conducted a survey in the range of 14 relics, including 13 relics by the ancient river and the other 1 in cave. In the survey, hundreds of ancient artifacts in Dong Van Plateau have been discovered. Those are working tools made from pebbles which bring the typical characteristics of Paleolithic era. Archeological experts have evaluated that those artifacts are similar to one found in October 2013 in Can Ty Commune, Ha Giang Province, which date back to over 20,000 years ago.

In Meo Vac District, the delegation excavated 4 places hiding smooth-body axes and concave grinding tables in communes of Thuong Phung, Xin Cai and Pa Vi. Those artifacts are evaluated to be used in the late Neolithic period, dating back to around 4,000 years ago. In vicinities of Dong Van Town, the delegation has found tools for flaking and carving of ancient people which were made from pebbles. In Yen Minh Districts, archaeologists found more 10 relics in communes of Na Khe, Mau Due, Niem Son and Du Gia.

Artifacts detected in this survey were mainly made from river pebbles that had simple techniques and crude designs. Much of outer surfaces are covered with a dark-brown weathered layer. However, flaking marks still prove clearly that prehistoric men used no sharpening techniques. In addition, archaeologists also discovered fossils considered as food remnants of ancient people such as tail-cut shells in Tham Ly Quyen Cave in Dong Van Karst Plateau area. These are relics dating back to the Stone Age. Thus, through a review of archaeological artifacts, Dong Van Global Geopark has discovered more than 20 relics having existed in many eras from the Old Stone Age to the metal era. Although the study is conducted in a fundamental way, excavated artifacts have proved the fact that Dong Van Karst Plateau is an area with great potential for prehistoric and proto-historic cultural relics.

In possession of a series of relics of geology and stratigraphy along with unique culture of ethnic minorities in mountainous areas, Dong Van Plateau has been officially recognized as the only global geopark in Vietnam, and the second in Southeast Asia, after Langkawi Geological Park in Malaysia, by Global Network of National Geoparks since 2010. Authorities of Ha Giang Provinces along with Management Board of Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark have constantly strive to restore and conserve heritage values and Earth science research here.
