The exhibition named “54” of Vietnam ethnic groups was officially opened on June 26th at Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. The exhibition lasting from June 25th to July 6th is hosted by two photographers Sebastien Laval and Le Vuong.

Vietnam is a multi-ethnic country with 54 groups including Kinh, Tay, Muong, Khmer, Nung, Hmong, and others. Each group has its own language, lifestyle, and culture. The largest group is Kinh, comprising nearly 90 % of the population in Vietnam and mainly inhabiting in the Red River Delta, the central coastal delta, the Mekong Delta and major cities. Other 53 ethnic minority group are scattered over mountainous areas spreading from the North to the South.

Visiting the exhibition, tourists may not only be introduced about Vietnam ethnic minorities but also explore their culture, daily lives and customs and habits through dynamic artistic photographs. It is considered as a form of indirect tourism which participants are able to travel across the country and meet local people but do not have to fly to Vietnam. The exhibition will bring Vietnamese people closer to French than ever. Therefore, they will feel the friendliness and hospitability of Vietnamese.

Vietnam ethnic people in their life

Sebastien Laval, a young French photographer visiting Vietnam in 1995 for the first time was immediately fascinated by Vietnamese people and landscapes here. Then he has spent 18 years documenting the lives of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam as well as the scenery of the land which he finds still a mystery.

The black and white photographs of Laval reflect his energy and passion when discovering a new attractive world, from daily activities to the poetic landscape. Laval’s photographs sketch the passion and beauty which he has found in the most ordinary moments. Earlier, more than 60 photos of 54 Vietnam ethnic groups of Laval have been exhibited at Truong Tien Bridge in Hue Festival in May 2014. French filmmakers Bertrand Edel and Faut Pas Rever of Thalassa France TV 3 have made a movie about Laval and his works.

Photographer Le Vuong is a veteran who has devoted his life for Vietnam photography. Aged 95, he still rides a bicycle around Hanoi in the early morning to explore the beauty of the city and take shoots to keep moments of lives of local people. He has traveled across Vietnam tirelessly in order to collect for himself a treasure of precious memories of a country life which is changing ceaselessly. The majority of his color photographs describe daily lives of the city and the country he loves. Vuong’s works have been displayed in several exhibitions in Europe and Asia, and even exhibited in the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts in Hanoi.

A similar exhibition was held last year in the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts as a cultural activity to celebrate the friendship of Vietnam and France.
