Dong Da Mound Festival is one of spiritual festivals in Hanoi on the occasion of Tet Holiday. The festival is annually held in January 5th in the lunar calendar in Dong Da Mound (Dong Da Hill), Quang Trung Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi Capital. Dong Da Festival is organized to commemorate the considerable merits of King Quang Trung - a national hero of Vietnam against foreign invaders. From the early morning on the day, many delegations from different provinces flocked to Dong Da Mound Relics the festival to offer incense in memory of a national hero Quang Trung Nguyen Hue. Leaders of the Party including National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, Deputy Prime Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Secretary of Ha Noi Municipal Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi, Head of Central Economics Commission Vuong Dinh Hue, Professor Vu Khieu, and other representatives of Party, National Assembly... also participated in the festivals and offered incense at Quang Trung Statue.
Similar to the previous years, Dong Da Mound Festival 2015 was held with many interesting games expressing the national martial spirit. In the opening of the festival, a drum performance created jubilant and boisterous atmosphere. From the early morning, dignitaries and elders gathered and prepared for the great festival. Up close to midday, a procession of King Quang Trung was set off from Khuong Thuong Village to Dong Da Hill. The procession was decorated with flags, a processional parasol, palanquins with a variety of colors, and the boisterous sounds of gongs and drums. Participants in the festival walked and sometimes danced to the rhythmic accompaniment of castanets. A group of young people, dressed in martial suit, then went around and performed a play to recount the whole period of the war.
After the procession, many other special activities were held involving incense offering to King Quang Trung and martial arts demonstrations to recreate Ngoc Hoi - Dong Da battle. The most attracting and youthful in the festival was the last group with 'Five Dragon" demonstration. Young people in Dong Quang Village and Khuong Thuong Village emulated to plait straw into shapes of big dragons. A band of youth in uniform went around the Five Dragon and dance also with an objective of recreating the former battle. After all solemn rituals, visitors joined in many folk games and traditional art performances such as dragon dance, wrestling, human chess, and cock fighting, and so on.
226 years ago (in 1789), Dong Da Mount was a bloody battlefield. Tay Son Rebels under the command of the national hero Quang Trung-Nguyen Hue defeated invaders in the evening of January 4th and the early morning of January 5th (in the lunar calendar). The army defeated more than 29 thousand troops invaders to protect the national sovereignty. Dong Da Hill became a historical relics witnessing the failure of Northern invaders. From that time, Dong Da Festival is held every year on January 5th to commemorate the vitory of Nguyen Hue army.
