On February 2nd, 2015 the opening ceremony of Hanoi Old Quarter Cultural Exchange Center was held at 50 Dao Duy Tu Street in Hang Buong Ward of Hoan Kiem District. The project was built on land formerly of San Nhan Dai Theater, later renamed Lac Viet and Hiep Thanh Theater. This is one of activities held in 85th commemoration of the establishment of the Vietnam Communist Party. With the aim of promoting and protecting the heritage's values, the Cultural Exchange Center of Hanoi Old Quarter is a project in the framework of cooperation between Hanoi and Toulouse - French city on heritage conservation of Hanoi Old Quarter. With an area of 458 m², the center consists of 3 floors and one basement. The structure of center strictly follows the principles of conservation, contours and shape of the old work, combined with contemporary architectural style. The Hanoi Old Quarter Cultural Exchange Center has a style of traditional architecture with characteristics of Old Quarter in Hanoi.
In the center of the bustling old quarter, the exchange center is a precious public serving place, a rare and meaningful relaxing stopover with many historical and cultural events held here. Though the idea of design is preserving traditional spaces, with the simple facade and bright interior, the center is portrayed by glass windows and walls. It shows that preservation is a kind of symbolic metaphors. Perhaps, Lac Viet Theater becomes a cultural exchange center is a need with changes in architectural appearance. Whether this is a good suggestion to save many old theaters, museums or entertainment places in Hanoi. These works were invested greatly, but they are not interested by local or visitors, and do not meed the need of local people.
The year 2015 will predict projects related to preserving old towns with a large investment, a profound impact on local lives with the most exciting lifestyle in Hanoi. With the function as the Center gathering information related to conservation in the Hanoi Old Quarter, the center needs to access the local site's materials, and over 100-year historical urban area, and constantly update additional information from the past to the present. The output of the Center serves the conservation, and establishes effective urban databases management, and accumulates rich culture, history closely related to the growth of urban economy.
In the time to come,visitors will have a chance to visit and learn about the conservation of tangible and intangible values of heritages in Hanoi Old Quarter, contributing to promote the image of of the old streets among famous attractions in Hanoi. Hanoi Old Quarter Center for Cultural Exchange is built to organize and introduce the conservation of heritage values in the old town.
