Cultural events welcoming Lunar New Year in Hanoi Old Quarter

Hanoi Old Quarter has been known as the cultural and historical center of Hanoi. To welcome Lunar New Year, in the Old Quarter, there are many interesting and meaningful cultural events taking place.

In order to continue preserving and promoting values of Vietnam cultural heritages and promulgating the image of Hanoi Old Quarter, on welcoming New Year, Management Board of Hanoi Old Quarter organizes many outstanding traditional cultural activities to celebrate Vietnamese Lunar New Year at some famous relics in Old Quarter Hanoi. On February 10th, the Management Board of Hanoi Old Quarter launched opening ceremony cultural and art activities during Tet holiday.

This is the 6th year that the organizer holds traditional cultural activities on the occasion of Vietnamese New Year to introduce typical traditional customs of old Hanoian during Tet holiday to local people and visitors to the people. Specifically, there are many meaningful and outstanding activities held in famous attractions in Hanoi Old Quarter. At Kim Ngan Temple (42-44 Hang Bac Street), from February 10th to March 10th, Nguyen Huu Sam artisan family in Song Ho Commune, Thuan Thanh District (Bac Ninh) will introduce Dong Ho folk painting. On 20 and 22 February (i.e the second and the fourth day of New Year), Thanh Liem traditional water puppet club will perform at 19:30. The Heritage House at 87 Ma May will be a place to introduce Vietnam culture and traditional Tet space of Hanoi families with typical images: New Year altar, New Year couplets... Also, Vietnam Musical Development Center will host many concerts of traditional music at Old Quarter Information Center at 28 Hang Buom Street. Many interesting activities are held in Dong Thanh Temple at 7 Hang Vai, Dong Lac Temple at 38 Hang Dao, and Co Vu Temple at 85 Hang Gai...

In addition, from February 8th to March 8 at Hang Da Galleria (at No. 1 Hang Da Street in Hanoi Old Quarter) "Mùi Tết" Exhibition will take place. The exhibition displays paper paintings, paper statues, bronze reliefs, and pottery statues of artists such as Nguyen Van Chung, Thai Nhat Minh, Ha Huy Muoi, and Nguyen Viet Thang. The name of Mùi Tết Exhibition not just suggests to name the New Year's mascot - Goat, but also implies each work plays as a flavor of Tet holiday.

Works in the exhibition of four artists including Thai Nhat Minh, Nguyen Van Chung, Ha Huy Muoi, and Nguyen Viet Thang are their new works. But, with the same theme, each artist with different material, genres, artistic styles bring the diversity in depicting image of goat. These activities contribute to raising awareness of people in preservation and promotion of traditional cultural values, and characteristic of Hanoi. At the same time, they enrich cultural and spiritual life of the old town, increase attraction for local and foreign tourists. According to Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, during Tet holiday, there will be many cultural and art activities. To specify, in the evening of February 18 at Ly Thai To Flower Garden and Me Linh Plaza Shopping Mall, there will have many events taking place to welcome New Year Eve.

Mr. To Van Dong, Director of the Department asserted this year cultural attractions and festivals will be more civilized, healthy and cleaner. In spring of 2015, Vietnam Writers' Association will organize events: International Conference on Vietnam Literature Promotion, Asia-Pacific Poetry Festival, and Vietnam Poetry Day with the participation of over 150 delegates from 40 countries. In particular, Vietnam Poetry Day has many new features, highlight the theme of literature accompanying protection of sea and island sovereignty and national border security. In addition to Hanoi, other famous destinations in Vietnam such as Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh City also have many interesting activities to serve local residents and visitors.
