The Cultural Heritage Festival is an annual festival held by Suffolk County Asian American Advisory Board (SCAAB). The festival aims to introduce Americans and international tourists to unique cultural features of countries and territories in Asia Pacific region, simultaneously, to open up opportunities for cultural exchange between countries. Dr. Jim Young, Chairman of SCAAB and Head of Organizing Committee has said that the theme of this year festival is “One world – many cultures”.
Vietnam joins the festival along with other Asian nations such as Japan, India, Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan (China), Korea, Bangladesh and China. Permanent Representatives Delegation of Vietnam at the United Nations, Trade Representatives and representatives of other agencies of Vietnam in New York have brought unique characteristics of Vietnamese culture to the festival through Ao Dai, a Vietnamese traditional costume, folk dances, handicraft items and some agricultural products imbued with Vietnamese flavor.
The festival began with a lion dance parade by the Vietnamese delegation. Following are traditional dances and music performances of other countries and territories. The dance “Beo dat may troi” (a folk song of Vietnam) as well as solo performance of monochord by Vietnamese students who are attending universities and schools of Northeast region in the USA has received admiring applause and great praises of the audience. The program of enjoying coffee flavor in Vietnamese style also attracted many attentions of international friends participating in the festival. A large number of local people in Suffolk County have expressed their impression with exquisite handicrafts as well as amazing culinary culture of Vietnam.
Mrs. Pham Hue Anh, a staff at Brookhaven National Laboratory and also a member of the festival’s organizing board, has thanked Permanent Representative Delegation of Vietnam at the UN and Vietnamese representative agencies in New York for taking part in and supporting enthusiastically the festival, contributing to promote Vietnamese culture to Americans in particular and tourists all around the world in general.
Vietnamese culture has been appreciated by many nations all around the world. On May 27th to 31st, an exhibition honoring Vietnamese culture is held in Narrogin city, Western Australia, as one of activities to celebrate the 41st anniversary of diplomatic relationship between Vietnam and Australia. Contemporary paintings, calligraphy works, traditional pottery, water puppets and typical Vietnamese tea and coffee products were on display at the exhibition. The exhibition is an ideal opportunity for Vietnam to promote its unique culture, boost the cultural exchange between Vietnam and Australia and deepen their comprehensive cooperation.
